Europe’s best-kept secret astounds and attracts with culture and cuisine. Take a trip and discover a nation of connoisseurs as you explore the two sides of this cosmopolitan country. In northern Flanders, Flemish Dutch is spoken in the great cities of Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent, but in southern Wallonia, you’ll hear French in Liège, Namur and historic Tournai while the capital of Brussels offers a mix of both. Like a microcosm of greater Europe, Belgium shines with its multilingual, multicultural, and multifaceted character.

Destination facts
Language
Dutch, French and German are official languages, but many speak English, especially within the cities.
When to visit
The best times to visit Belgium are during its shoulder seasons in spring and fall, thanks to the mild weather and smaller crowds.
What to bring back
Belgian beer glasses, which come in unique shapes and sizes; Belgian chocolates which are world-famous; antiques from traveling flea markets; speculoos and other types of biscuits; and Magritte souvenirs. For something extremely high-end, look to Antwerp, the diamond capital of the world, or crystal pieces from Val Saint Lambert.
What to eat
Local specialties like waterzooi (a creamy egg yolk soup with fish or chicken) from Ghent, tarte au riz (a cross between flan, rice pudding and a tart) from Verviers, couque biscuits (extremely hard honey biscuits which double as holiday ornaments) from Dinant, and the national dish: moules-frites (mussels and fries).
Fun fact
Belgium may be famous for its invention of french fries, but it’s also the home of the saxophone (invented in Dinant), as well as the highest concentration of castles per square mile.
