Disneyland was built atop former orange groves and opened in the summer of 1955 with only 18 attractions (14 of which are still open today!). Walt Disney himself presided on the opening ceremony with a touching speech that included the now-famous lines: “To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savour the challenge and promise of the future.”
