Day 3

Reykjavík - Golden Circle - Vík Region (approx. 280 km)

Head towards the Golden Circle in the direction of the famous sites of Strokkur and Gullfoss. Strokkur is the most active geyser  in the country and erupts approximately every 7 minutes and sends up huge water jets into the air up to 40 metres! Continue to the mythical Gullfoss waterfall and admire it from all angles, each one more breathtaking than the next. This striking 32-metre-long, 70-metre-wide waterfall plummets in two stages. Stop for lunch on an Icelandic farm that produces delicious dairy products like feta cheese, ice cream and yogurt. Learn about the production methods and enjoy a tasting. Your journey continues towards the east along the south coast of Iceland, where you’ll have the chance to see Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, some of the best-known in the country. En route to Vik, you’ll see Reynisfjara beach, known for its black sand and unique cliff landscapes. In the summer, it’s the ideal spot to see puffins, one of Iceland’s native birds. Stop for the night in the Vik region in the southernmost part of the country.

Day 4

VVík Region - Skaftafell National Park - Jökulsárlón – Egilsstaðir (approx. 450 km)

Your first stop today is Skaftafell National Park, which is part of Vatnajökull National Park. See unforgettable glaciers spreading into the plains. Even though it’s surrounded by glaciers, the park is actually one of the least snowy regions of the country because of the southern winds. Skaftafell is often compared to the Alps - see for yourself, and decide if you agree! Stop for a photo op at the extremely picturesque Skaftafell National Park for glacier views from afar, then head towards the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the biggest in Europe, and admire the icebergs floating on clear blue water. Stop for lunch near Jökulsárlón, then continue along the east coast through charming fishing villages en route to Egilsstaðir, your final destination for the night.

Day 5

Egilsstaðir - Dettifoss - Lake Mývatn - Goðafoss - Akureyri (approx. 330 km)

Start your day off at the Dettifoss waterfalls, the mightiest in all of Europe, then continue to the geothermal site of Hverarönd in the Namaskard area, known for its mud pools and thermal baths. When you discover its steam vents, fumaroles, deposits and aroma of sulphur, along with steam jets, you’ll think you’ve arrived on another planet.  At Lake Mývatn, situated in an active volcano zone with the Katla volcano just nearby, take in the incredible volcanic formations, with breathtaking columns and craters. The lava fields at Dimmuborgir, or “the dark castle,” feature must-see landscapes, created out of huge lava rock formations and caves. Enjoy lunch in the Lake Mývatn region, then stop at the waterfall of the gods, Goðafoss, on your way to Akureyri.

It’s also home to rich birdlife. Enjoy lunch at your leisure, then in the afternoon, travel to Skagafjörður, where you might see wild Icelandic horses. These wild and independent horses have been around for centuries, since the time of the Vikings. Drawing their strength from nature, they are unfazed by wind and rain. Borgarnes: Snæfellsnes Peninsula (approx. 320 km)

Explore the Snӕfellsnes peninsula today! Dominated by the 1,446-metre-high Snæfellsjökull, this volcano-glacier inspired Jules Verne’s book Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Volcanoes in this region have been dormant for thousands of years, and the moss-covered lava formations create a unique landscape – and a perfect photo op! Proceed on a beautiful route between sea and mountains to the village of Arnarstapi, with a quaint mini-port at the end of a creek. Travel around the volcano-glacier Snaefellsjökull on a lava trail and marvel at its lunar landscapes. Continue to in the charming village of Hellissandur and the fishing ports of Ólafsvík et de Grundarfjörður, then stop at Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland.
