Language

Hungarian, or Magyar, is the official language, but German and English are both spoken in the touristic areas.

When to visit

The best time to visit Hungary is from April to June and September to October when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.

What to bring back

Hungarian paprika is some of the finest in the world and comes in multiple grades, hand-crafted porcelain dolls dressed in traditional costumes, Hungarian wines, traditional embroidered textiles and colourful hand-painted pottery from Kalocsa.

What to eat

Hungarian goulash, paprikash (chicken stewed with paprika), lángos (dough deep-fried and topped with garlic, cheese, and sour cream), and chimney cake. Be sure to try some of the local wines like Egri Bikavér (dry, red) and Tokaji Aszú, a dessert wine which was a favourite of Louis XIV, the Sun King.

Fun fact

Hungary has the largest thermal water cave system in the world, with the capital of Budapest home to over 100 thermal springs. Its nickname is the City of Spas.
