Thanks to its isolated location deep in the Pacific, New Zealand is one of the world’s last true frontiers, with primordial forests and millennia-old mountain ranges untouched by human development. Explore the island’s natural wonders in Mount Cook, Milford Sound and Lake Tekapo, or head into Rotorua, Auckland or Wellington to experience Kiwi culture firsthand.

When to visit
If you’re wondering what the best time to visit New Zealand is, we recommend going during their summer, from December to February, when the country enjoys long, sunny days and comfortable weather.
What to bring back
New Zealand wine, Manuka honey, merino wool or possum fur products like sweaters, gloves or socks, Whittaker’s Chocolate and pounamu (greenstone) jewelry or carvings.
What to eat
Lamb is one of New Zealand’s top exports for good reason and can be found at restaurants nationwide. Hāngī is a traditional Māori style of cooking best enjoyed in Rotorua, hokey pokey is a local dessert made of vanilla ice cream filled with crunchy honeycomb, and you must try New Zealand’s world-famous savoury pies.
Fun fact
There’s a reason why New Zealand’s sprawling landscapes and beautiful beaches are so well-preserved—nearly 30% of the country’s land mass is publicly owned and protected, with over 80,000 square kilometres specifically designated as national parks.
