Smouldering volcanoes, puffin-covered rocks and black sand plains await as you visit the country's gems like Lake Myvatn, Skaftafell National Park, Geysir hot springs and the Gullfoss waterfall. Itinerary

Day 1

Depart Canada

Fly to Reykjavik.

Day 2

Welcome to Reykjavik

Arrive in Reykjavik and pick up your rental car, then check in to your hotel for the night.

Day 3

Reykjavík - Borgarfjördur - Skagafjördur or Eyjafjördur

Drive towards Borgarfjordur, then continue north through Skagafjordur. Visit the museum at Glaumbær ($) and finish your day in Akureyri.

    Drive towards Borgarfjordur, an area rich with culture and history. Pass splendid waterfalls and stop at Iceland's largest hot springs. Drive north through Skagafjordur to admire the region's famous Icelandic horses. Your home for the night is Akureyri, Iceland's second-biggest urban area, boasting stunning views and great spots for food and drink.

Day 4

Akureyri – Gódafoss – Mývatn or Húsavík

Today, explore the marvels of Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve.

    Explore Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve, where you can visit the mud pools and steam vents of Namaskard. Walk up to the top of Hverfjall crater, and take a dip in the geothermal waters east of the lake. Return to Akureyri for the night.

Day 5

Húsavík – Tjörnes – Ásbyrgi – Dettifoss – Egilsstadir

Head to the charming fishing village of Husavik, then drive along the coastline of the Tjornes peninsula and stop at Asbyrgi. Continue on to Egilsstadir passing through the Moorudalur highlands. Stay overnight in the Egilsstadir area.

    Stop at Asbyrgi glacial canyon. Drive along the coastline of the Tjornes Peninsula and stop at Asbyrigi, a gorge with impressive rock walls and an abundant vegetation. Drive across the Moorudalur highlands until you reach the fertile valley of Herad.

Day 6

The East Fjords - Hofn

Discover Iceland's East Fjords. Drive through the Almannaskard tunnel and arrive in the Hofn region for the night.

    In Stoovarfjordur, visit one of the world's most complete collections of Icelandic minerals. Soak up Iceland's charm in the village of Djupivogur. Western Iceland is known for its remote beauty, filled with glaciers, waterfalls and hot springs.

Day 7

Jökulsárlón – Skaftafell – Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Vík

Today, head towards Iceland's stunning Skaftafell National Park, then continue to the Vik area.

    Explore Skaftafell National Park. Drive by the glaciers of Vatnajokull, Europe's largest ice cap, and arrive at Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon at the foot of Iceland's highest mountain.

Vík – Skógar – Golden Circle – Reykjavík

Travel The Golden Circle, then on to Reykjavik.

    CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) CDW does not cover damage to the underside of the vehicle, damage due to driving through rivers or any kind of water, it does not cover damage due to driving through sandstorm or damage which is caused by loose rocks which get thrown at the car on gravel roads. It is a condition of all Icelandic car insurances that the driver is always responsible for such damage.

    A credit card is always necessary for insurance purposes. Acceptable credit cards are: Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club.
