Tenerife, Winter Escape, North Coast
Overview
If you’re thinking about an extended-stay winter vacation, Tenerife is one of the most popular options in Europe, with good weather year-round.
Tenerife’s North Coast offers a very different experience compared to the sunny resort-heavy south. It’s greener and better suited to travellers looking for authenticity and nature.
The north is shaped by its Atlantic exposure and trade winds, which create a lush, subtropical environment. You’ll see banana plantations, dramatic cliffs, volcanic beaches and dense forests, especially around Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its ancient laurel forests and hiking trails.
Unlike the south, beaches here are often black volcanic sand or rocky coves, such as those near Puerto de la Cruz, one of the island’s oldest tourist destinations.
The North Coast is where Tenerife’s cultural identity feels strongest. Cities like La Orotava preserve Spanish-era architecture, wooden balconies and historic streets. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz de Tenerife blends local life with urban amenities, museums and events.

Days 3-15
Tenerife, North Coast
Tenerife’s North Coast feels like a completely different island compared to the sunbaked south—lush, dramatic and much more tied to local Canarian life. If you’re exploring it, here’s how to get a rich, well-rounded experience.
Start with Puerto de la Cruz, the cultural heart of the north. It’s lively but not overbuilt, with black-sand beaches like Playa Jardín and the famous Lago Martiánez, designed by César Manrique. It’s a great base for walking, eating and soaking in the atmosphere.
Head inland just a bit and you’ll hit La Orotava, one of the most beautiful historic towns in the Canary Islands. Experience cobbled streets, wooden balconies and spots like Casa de los Balcones. It’s quieter than the coast and gives you a real sense of history.
Nature is a big draw here. The Anaga Rural Park in the northeast is a must—misty forests, sharp ridges and hiking trails that feel almost prehistoric. If you’re up for a short adventure, drive to Taganana for wild coastal views and fresh seafood.
For a more rugged seaside vibe, check out Garachico. It was rebuilt after a volcanic eruption and now features natural lava pools like El Caletón—great for a swim when the sea is calm.
If you like wine or food, the north is also Tenerife’s agricultural hub. The valley around La Orotava produces excellent local wines—look for small bodegas rather than big commercial tours.
A few practical notes:
The North Coast is greener because it gets more clouds, so expect more changeable weather than in the south. That said, the scenery is richer for it. Renting a car helps a lot, since the best spots are spread out and often tucked into hillsides.
