Visit Bali: get started

Places to go in Bali include Ubud city, where you can languish by your hotel pool in jungles alive with the sounds of local wildlife.

Want to see some of that wildlife up close? Meet the long-tailed macaques of the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud or hike Mount Batur (an active volcano with UNESCO status) and keep an eye out for monkeys there as well.

Explore your spiritual side by visiting some of the 20,000 temples that have given Bali the nickname of "Island of the Gods.” A great place to start is Elephant Cave (Goa Gajah), which is surrounded by lush greenery and bathing pools and dates to the 9th century.

Then take in the jaw-dropping views of the island’s expansive rice terraces in Tegallalang and Jatiluwih —which are UNESCO World Heritage sites—before heading to the beach to surf favourite spots like Uluwatu, Padang Padang, and Canggu. If you’re not up for trying the waves, the island is home to many stunning beaches for you to stretch out on, including Kuta, Seminyak, and Nusa Dua.

While you’re there, don’t miss your chance to try a Balinese massage, which includes acupressure, reflexology, stretching and aromatherapy.

Destination facts

Language

Balinese, but Indonesian is widely spoken.

What to bring back

Kopi Luwak, one of the world’s most expensive coffees, is made from coffee cherries digested by civets (a small nocturnal animal, similar to a mongoose). Beautifully patterned textiles and silver jewelry are also popular take-home treasures.

What to eat

Fried rice topped with egg and meat (nasi goreng), roasted duck cooked in banana leaves (bebek betutu) or classic satay meat skewers served with peanut sauce. For dessert, try bubur injin, a black rice pudding served with coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. Fried bananas (piseng goreng) and ice cream are also a must-try. An abundance of tropical fruit, like mangosteen and snakeskin fruit, is also available for when you need a snack.

Fun fact

Bali sunsets appear bigger because of several factors, including the island’s location near the equator and the Ponzo Illusion, which can make the sun appear larger near the horizon.
