The island of Japan introduces first-time visitors to seamless blends of tradition and modernity. While ancient shrines, serene gardens and traditional tea ceremonies reflect the longstanding remnants of its past, bustling metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka have trademarked Japan as a world leader in all domains, including cutting-edge technology, futuristic architectural styles, and culinary excellence. No matter where you start, you’ll always find something new to do.
Visit Japan: get started
Book a Japan tour and see the capital city of Tokyo, plus attractions like the Imperial Palace, the Meiji Shrine and Mount Fuji. Next, travel to Osaka to immerse yourself in Japan’s street food capital, and visit its trendy neighbourhoods and attractions like the Osaka Castle, the Tampozan Ferris Wheel, and the Tower of the Sun. If you have the time, we also recommend going to cities like Kyoto and Hiroshima for an extended history lesson.

When to visit
We recommend going during the off-season, from December to February or from June to August, when there are fewer crowds, and the weather is cooler. The peak season is from March to May and September to November.
What to bring back
You’re most likely to find the best Japanese souvenirs in various shopping districts around the country, and top items of interest include traditional folk toys, kimonos, Japanese whiskey, lucky charms (omamori) and pop culture mementos. For ramen snacks and sweets, visit a convenience store or konbini.
What to eat
If you’re planning on visiting Japan, expect to eat a lot. Sushi, ramen noodles, tempura and sashimi are some of the most popular Japanese dishes out there, but we recommend tasting other traditional foods like crescent-shaped Gyoza dumplings, fried Karaage chicken, and, of course, a bowl of Miso soup.
Fun fact
Not only is Japan one of the oldest countries in the world; it is also home to the world's oldest company! With over 1440 years under its belt, the construction company Kongō Gumi was established in in the year 578 A.D.
