What to eatCod (bacalhau), piri piri chicken, sardines, and salame de chocolate (literally, chocolate salami).
What to bring backA colourful, ceramic Rooster of Barcelos figurine, the country’s unofficial symbol, Claus Porto soaps, Madeiran embroidery, traditional Portuguese pottery and vinho verde (green wine).
Fun FactWhile the famous rooster is usually gifted for good luck, it also is the product of a legend that claims that a roasted rooster resurrected to prove a man’s innocence. Charged with a crime he didn’t commit, the man pointed to his judge’s cooked poultry and declared it would caw if he was innocent…and it did!
