Circled by seven hills, Lisbon bristles with old-fashioned finesse. Vintage trams rattle up cobbled streets to a medieval neighbourhood, past traditional taverns and music cafes. But don't be fooled by the city's timeless good looks. Beyond its Gothic monastery and Moorish castle, Lisbon is always looking forward with innovative cuisine, an explosive arts scene and non-stop nightlife.

Fun fact
Many Lisbon landmarks appear on UNESCO’s World Heritage lists (the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, etc.), but the city also received recognition for something that weaves its way between buildings—fado music. Originating in Lisbon, the mournful, guitar-led songs were added to UNESCO’s World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011.
