WHAT TO EAT

Caribbean classics like the cubano sandwich (try it at the West Tampa Sandwich Shop or at Florida’s oldest restaurant, Columbia Restaurant!), a meal at Tampa institution Bern’s Steak House, gourmet treats at one of the trendy food halls like Heights Public Market and seafood like oysters, crabs, shrimp and more.

WHAT TO BRING BACK

Merch or apparel from local sports teams (Tampa Bay Lightning or Tampa Bay Buccaneers), a paella pan or a souvenir sangria pitcher with all of Columbia Restaurant’s secret ingredients, craft beers from Cigar City Brewing and cute souvenirs from the TECO Manatee Viewing Center or the Florida Aquarium.

FUN FACT

When in Tampa, you’ll most likely want to wander by the waterfront, but be weary of… pirates! Once a year, pirates invade the city with the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, which has taken place since 1904. The festival’s highlights include giant replica pirate ships sailing through the bay and a Parade of Pirates through the city’s streets. The festival is named in honour of José Gaspar, a famous pirate who may have not actually existed, but is still Tampa’s mascot today.
