Perched on the Pacific, Puerto Vallarta perfects the idea of a resort town. It curves around a sandy bay, greets every sunset and stands before a backdrop of lush rainforest and epic mountains. Just north of the city, Riviera Nayarit covers the coast with fishing towns turned luxurious resort hubs, blending the best of both worlds between forested peaks, wild jungles and the majesty of the ocean.

What to bring back
You’re in the state of Jalisco, which is the birthplace of… tequila! Also, colourful, indigenous Huichol art or textiles and handmade ceramics.
What to eat
Torta ahogada (a baguette sandwich drenched in chili or tomato sauce), birria (spicy meat stew), chiles anchos rellenos (stuffed ancho chiles) and pescado embarazado (grilled fish on a skewer).
Fun fact
We can also thank Jalisco for giving us another Mexican staple… mariachi! Although the states of Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán also make the claim, Jalisco is most famously recognized as the birthplace of the musical style defined by multiple string instruments, wide-brimmed sombreros and festive garb.
